 In 2009 brothers John and David Helterbrand developed an idea for a light bar which led to them acquiring a United States Patent. As progress was made with light bar manufacturing and sales, some local police departments were asking them to do the installation work on their vehicles. In 2011 the company Public Safety Upfitters, LLC was formed, with David and Lisa Helterbrand as the owners. The company’s purpose was mainly for manufacturing the light bars and was also for occasionally providing installation work. While equipment installation was a small part of the business venture, word spread to other departments about the quality of the installations. There was not an actual shop and all work was completed in a small bay in an automotive shop that family friends owned. In the craziness of life, John and David had decided that they just could not work full time and run a business. John worked at Ranken Technical College and David was the Fleet Manager at Don Brown Chevrolet. So, in 2014, they made the decision that they were going to stop installation work and only pursue the manufacturing portion of the business. Their spouses, Susan and Lisa, came up with a better plan…
